The Crypto Browser will simplify the Web3 experience, integrating crypto wallets and support for exchanges, NFT marketplaces, and dApps.

Multi-platform web browser Opera has announced the launch of its Web3 “Crypto Browser Project” in public beta for Windows, Mac, and Android. The project will provide a further alternative to existing browsers like the regular Opera browser and one that the company has dedicated to gamers.

The beta release builds on the capacities of its first web browser launched back in 2018, which offered an integrated cryptocurrency wallet and basic Web3 support. In addition, it adds features like easy access to cryptocurrency/NFT exchanges, support for decentralized apps (dApps), and more, to “simplify the Web3 user experience that is often bewildering for mainstream users,” Opera EVP Jorgen Arnensen explains in a statement.

“With today’s step, we are providing our users and the industry with a dedicated Web3 browser, backed by a strong product team and with the aim of accelerating the evolution of the next generation of the Web,” the announcement reads. “Too few of the web browsing experiences offered today have been built with the intention of putting Web3 centerstage and making blockchain technologies understandable and easy to use.”

While the new browser allows the use of third-party wallets, a built-in non-custodial wallet that supports blockchains including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Celo, and Nervos, will let users access their crypto without the need for any extensions.

Users will be able to perform transactions such as buying cryptocurrencies from FIAT, sending and receiving cryptocurrencies, checking wallet balances, and swapping crypto directly in-wallet.

It even offers a secure clipboard that protects their copy/paste actions from being seen by other apps.

Opera’s Crypto Browser also provides support for the blockchain-based decentralized internet in the making that is Web3. The feature is complete with extra security via blockchain encryption, access to GameFi platforms “where you can earn as you play your way through all sorts of metaverses,” and even a “Crypto Corner” where users can get up to speed with the latest blockchain news about Web3.

In anticipation of possible criticism about the environmental impact generated by the use of blockchain technologies – something Mozilla, Ubisoft, and other companies have been hit with – Opera is working on implementing a more energy-efficient Etherium Layer 2 standard “as quickly as possible.”

The Opera Crypto Browser is currently available for Android, Windows, and Mac. However, Opera is also working on releasing an iOS version expected to arrive in the near future.
