Dr DisRespect co-founded Midnight Society, which aims to produce a game publishing platform on the Polygon blockchain.
Midnight Studio has been described as “the innovative new AAA gaming studio” co-founded by Dr DisRespect, one of Youtube’s and formerly Twitch’s top stars. Now apart from streaming, the real-life Guy Beahm would also like to become an influential figure in Web3, starting with a game publishing platform on the Polygon Blockchain through a collaboration with Polygon Studios. The objective is “to allow players to trade in-game items freely without incurring high transaction fees or negatively impacting the environment,” two aspects that many other NFT and Web3 applications and movements have been struggling with.
In a joint statement, Midnight Studio and Polygon Studios released a joint survey that found 97% of gamers want to own, trade in-game items. The survey polled over 400,000 applicants that took part in the studios’ NFT Founders Access Pass program, which grants holders exclusive benefits, including access to pre-alpha “Snashot” game builds, voting rights on game development paths, merch drops, studio events, and a one-of-a-kind “Variant” PFP.
Soooo, yeah. The survey polled people who are already into NFTs and asked them if they liked having in-game items. And 97% of them said yes. Not at all surprising, really. Midnight Studio and Polygon Studios, just like other NFT and Web3-based companies, aim to address the issue of Web2 limitations – particularly in game ownership and in-game item trading limitations in current video games. According to Midnight Studio and Polygon Studios, Web2 gamers often resort to black markets for Player-to-Player transactions, while Web3 games offer safe, transparent, and uncensorable solutions. Meanwhile, Seth Green has recently lost his Bored Ape NFTs – preventing him from continuing on with his NFT show – and the perpetrators who stole his NFT refuse to return it. Hopefully, new efforts by new NFT studios can help improve the overall security of Web3 and make criminals actually accountable for their actions.
As Midnight Society co-founder and Studio Head Robert Bowling admits, “With any new technology, there are weaknesses, and what we loved about Polygon was their ability to address every concern we had while also having an eye towards where this technology could go in the future to support our grand ambition.”
Meanwhile, Polygon Studios CEO Ryan Wyatt says, “We’re thrilled to be working with Midnight Society as they expand the realms of possibilities in gaming. Blockchain-based games are quickly becoming the biggest focus of the gaming industry. Project Moon is entering the space by providing an off-chain and on-chain experience, allowing gamers to have the best of both worlds. They can own, monetize, and transfer digital assets in-game through the opt-in on-chain experience, without it being an obligation.”
Unlike many NFT games who are backed by unscrupulous and shady individuals who often mistreat their communities with rug pulls and false promises, Midnight Society actually has high-profile individuals in its leadership, including the aforementioned Dr DisRespect. Their leadership also includes Call of Duty, Halo, and Star Wars veterans Quinn DelHoyo and Robert “fourzerotwo” Bowling. Sumit Gupta, big-time entrepreneur, and angel investor, is also a part of the organization’s leadership.
According to a press release, Midnight Society chose to build its games on the Polygon Blockchain due to its low fees, high throughput, and its carbon-neutral status. These characteristics are also what encouraged other Web3 games and NFT projects like Sandbox, Decentraland, Opensea, and Decentral Games to migrate or develop in Polygon.
