Square Enix has ramped up its web3 campaign after announcing a partnership with Oasys Gaming. The Japanese video game developer has been one of the leading mainstream gaming companies pivoting to web3.

According to the partnership, Square Enix will become a node operator of the Oasys upcoming “environmentally friendly, proof of stake” blockchain.

The company joins a growing list of global video game makers that are exploring blockchain gaming including Bandai Namco Research, Sega, Ubisoft (which has a similar partnership with Tezos), Netmarble, WeMade, Com2uS and Yield Guild Games.

Commenting on the partnership, Yosuke Saito, Director, Square Enix Blockchain Entertainment Division, said: “We are excited to join the Oasys team and others in the gaming community on this project. Our shared enthusiasm for Web3 gaming makes this an exciting partnership for us and we look forward to gaining insights that can advance

the creation of all-new gameplay experiences for gamers across the globe.”

Square Enix showed its commitment to exploring opportunities in web3 gaming In May when it sold its western arm and its associated IPs (including Tomb Raider) to Embracer Group for $300 million.

At the time, Square Enix said: “The Transaction enables the launch of new businesses by moving forward with investments in fields including blockchain, AI, and the cloud.”

In February, the company inked a deal with Animoca Brands’ The Sandbox to bring the “Dungeon Siege” game to the metaverse, before launching its first NFT projects on Enjin’s Efinity blockchain in July.

Its collaboration with Oasys adds to a growing portfolio of partnerships that are designed to take its web3 campaign to a fast start.

Daiki Moriyama, Director, Oasys, commented: “To partner with a respected and ambitious gaming company such as Square Enix, helps us to accelerate our collective mission to bring blockchain gaming to the masses. With our partnership, we will be able to truly bring new experiences and empower gaming fans from all backgrounds while helping to establish the next stage of growth for blockchain entertainment.”
